Peacock Dress: June 2021 Video Diary || ft. Sewing Pattern Drafting Tutorial, Step by Step

The latest instalment in a very ambitious sewing project....

When a garment is embroidered, it's most common for the intricate work to be done first. A length of fabric is stretched on a frame and embroidered in the shape of the garment pattern pieces. When complete, the embroidered fabric is cut out and made into the garment.

The Peacock Dress is no exception. So I have to send fabric, gold threads, and beetle wings to India, along with a trace of the pattern for the skirt and bodice.

Now, the skirt pattern is a lot simpler than the bodice pattern I created last month... but it took a lot of detective work to get there.

What WAS the pattern for that skirt? I've walked around and around that glass case for years, looking for clues among all the dense embroidery, but I can only see one seam... and the skirt has been altered, too.

We can't take it off the mannequin to lay it flat and see the shape - it's way too precious and fragile - and we only have a couple of old photographs of Lady Curzon wearing it - so how on earth can we figure out what instructions Worth sent to Kishan Chand in India for the brand new dress?

Follow the clues in this month's video to discover the pattern for the iconic embroidered Peacock Dress skirt...
